What can Picasso can teach us about expertise and if it’s best to hire an agency or ecommerce expert?!
The story of the million dollar button I tell in this podcast is an exploration into hiring expertise. I have heard many renditions of this story, the latest was similar and an addition to the podcast. I read recently in “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a [BLEEP]” by Mark Manson.
First of all, let me preface this article with the underlying fact that I more than understand, hiring expertise is not cheap. Sometimes it comes at quite a shocking price as in the story told in Mark’s book cited below. That said, there are times that this expertise comes at a reasonable rate that can allow you to scale up the expertise as well as your business. Especially in the digital age we live in today.
“When Pablo Picasso was an old man, he was sitting in a cafe in Spain, doodling on a used napkin. He was nonchalant about the whole thing, drawing whatever amused him in that moment … some woman was looking on in awe. After a few minutes Picaso finished his coffee and crumpled up the napkin to throw away as he left. The woman stopped him. “Wait,” she said. “Can I have that napkin you were just drawing on? I’ll pay you for it”
“Sure,” Picasso replied. “Twenty thousand dollars”
The woman’s head jolted back as if he had just flung a brick at her. “What? It took you like two minutes to draw that.”
“No, ma’am,” Picasso said. “It took me over sixty years to draw this.” He stuffed the napkin into his pocket and walked away.
The concept here is simple: you are paying experts for their expertise not their time. Now that said, it still remains tricky, as I had spent thousands on engaging an agency that was run by one of if not the best known individual in SEO, only to in the end end the contract more than disappointed by the dismal results. Why were the results so poor? In my opinion it was because I still hired the agency not the individual. Agency’s have a place, but I believe that it’s in the individual that you will see the top level of success and direction. You can hire the agencies, or otherwise to execute on the strategies and tactics, but you need to start with the expertise if it is an area in which you are not considered an expert.
